Welcome

Studying the arts enriches our lives. Many experts have researched and shown how studying music and the arts is a benefit for those of all ages. Books such as The Mozart Effect by Don Campbell illustrate some of the positive influences of studying music. The College Entrance Examination Board reported in 1996 that students with experience in musical performance scored 51 points higher on the verbal part of the SAT and 39 points higher on the math section than the national average (Campbell 117).

Music has been an important part of my life and I have enjoyed teaching piano and voice lessons since 1998. I began studying the piano at the age of 8 and began studying voice with a private teacher at the age of 16. I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Penn State and a Master of Music degree in Voice Performance and Pedagogy from the Westminster Choir College. I'm pleased to currently be teaching students of all ages in State College, PA.

Please feel free contact me with any questions about taking voice and piano lessons. I have included tips below for making the most of your lesson time. I look forward to working with each and every student!

Here are some helpful tips to make the most of your lesson time!

Piano Students: Please bring all lesson books and a notebook or notepad each week. A notebook is helpful in keeping an account of your lesson assignments for each week. It is also a good tool for communication between the teacher and family. Music for lessons and performances should be purchased as recommended.

Voice Students: Please bring your own copy of the music that we are working on. It is against copyright rules for a teacher to copy music for a student or anyone else. You may find it helpful to bring a water bottle to your lesson, especially in the winter months with low humidity. A blank cassette tape is also a wonderful tool for recording all of your lessons! It can be helpful when you are learning new songs or to hear how your voice is progressing. I will provide the tape recorder to record your lessons. If you are preparing for an audition, solo, or learning a part for a school or church event, please inform me so that we can prepare you to be your best for the occasion!

All students will have the opportunity to perform in a recital. Performing is also a great way to learn and grow as a musician. It is also wonderful to share your talent with other students and learn from each other. I look forward to working with each and every one of my students!
