About Welcome to my online portfolio. I am a current graduate student studying aerospace engineering at the University of Michigan. I am particularly interested in fluid dynamics and propulsion and have studied compressible flow, viscous flow, turbulence, electric propulsion, and gas-turbine propulsion. I received my undergraduate degree in engineering science from the Pennsylvania State University. I have a broad range of interests that include nanotechnology, sustainability and energy efficiency, international policy, and photography. If you would like a copy of my resume, feel free to contact me via e-mail at sms5121@gmail.com. As an undergrad, I took a variety of classes in engineering, and I've listed a few of them below. Math:
Science:
Engineering Mechanics:
Other:
Nanotechnology
Other classes included micro and macroeconomics, Shakespeare, Islam, Italian, photography, percussion, and architecture. One of my favorite non-engineering classes was IST 445H: Globalization Trends and World Issues.
Photos In 2004, I got my first digital camera to use on a high school trip to Europe. Since then, I’ve upgraded my camera (to a Canon Rebel XT) and have hopefully improved my skill level as well. I took a basic digital photography class while studying abroad in Rome, and I hope to continue with more formal training in the future. In 2010, I completed a 365 project that involved taking one photograph every day for the year. You can view all of the photos at my 365 Project Set on Flickr. International 2004
In high school, I spent three weeks touring around Europe as a People to People Student Ambassador. We visited Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, France and England. We learned about the local cultures and had unique opportunities such as meeting with a British member of parliament and planting a tree for peace in the German Black Forest. 2007
I spent ten days in France on an industry tour with my Engineering Design class. We had plant tours at companies such as Herta and the Arcelor steel plant in Dunkerque. We stayed at the Université d'Artois at IUT-Béthune with other French engineering students. 2007
This was a six-week study abroad session in Rome, through the Integrative Arts program at Penn State. I took two courses: Digital Photography and Italian Architecture. I got much better at using my camera, and learned a lot about architecture styles and city planning. We traveled as a class to Florence, Venice, Pompeii, Paestum and Pienza and I made individual trips to Paris and Vienna. We lived in downtown Rome in an apartment overlooking Piazza Navona. And our classes were scheduled to be in Collegio Romano, but we usually held our lectures at historic sites like the Forum. (Click here for photos.) 2008
I spent the spring semester of my junior year at the University of Leeds. Located close to Manchester, Leeds is a city roughly a bit bigger than Austin, Texas. I took classes in Thermodynamics, Transport Engineering (I learned to design a roundabout!), Fourier Series Analysis, Film Music, and Web Design. I made some really great friends, and was part of the women's rugby team and a fellowship group called Cafe Church. When I wasn't in class, playing rugby, or hanging out with friends at the pub, I made side trips to Germany, Denmark, Spain and Norway. I even had the chance to visit the Thurleigh airfield where my grandfather was based in World War II -- an unforgettable opportunity. (Click here for photos.)
